“Emi” was a returning client. When we saw her during her last pregnancy in one of our pregnancy resource centers, she was excited and told us how she and her husband had always wanted a big family. We celebrated her journey into motherhood with her, and she even sent us pictures of her son after he was born.
Later that year she reached out and said that she was seeking an abortion.
At her appointment, she burst into tears as soon as she sat down in the client room. Her advocate gave her a safe space to let out her conflicting emotions, and asked Emi how her circumstances had changed since her last pregnancy.
Emi shared that she suffered postpartum depression after the birth of her son and unfortunately had not been offered any kind of support by her prenatal provider. What should have been a joyous time bonding with her new baby was incredibly difficult and discouraging. Emi didn’t believe that she had the strength to go through that experience again.
Her advocate listened to her and validated the challenges she had faced and her fears for the future. However, she also helped Emi identify her sources of support, reflect on the growth and fulfillment she had experienced through overcoming challenges, and consider the impact of her decision in the long-term.
By the end of the appointment, Emi had developed a plan of support for her pregnancy but was still feeling tentative. Within a few weeks of check-ins from her advocate, Emi had already made great progress and felt confident and excited in her decision to carry. She thanked us for the encouragement, guidance and unplanned pregnancy help she received at Care Net that empowered her to choose life.
At Care Net, Emi will continue to receive compassionate care to support her and her growing family.
